PostHeaderIcon how can I consolidate my debts when I have bad credit?

My friend was asking me last night over a very emotional phone call how she could consolidate her debts before she gets married in August of 2009 and before her OSAP payments start in June 2009. I didn’t know what to tell her so I figured I would ask on here.

The debt I think is around 000.00 not including the student loan. She doesnt have good credit at all since shes had these debts for about 5 years with no payments.

She should be talking to her bank or financial institution about her current debt. Or she could speak to a credit counselling organization. Most urban centres have them.

With regard to her OSAP debt, she needs to get on the canlearn.ca website and do some research about her repayment options. While she is in school, as long as she has done all the proper paperwork, the government is paying the interest on any loans from previous years. The interest-free status of the loan for her current school year changes as of the first day of the month following her graduation. (so if she graduates December 10, 2008 the interest rate is not set until January 1, 2009) So if she had some money saved up, she could make a payment on her student loan before January 1, 2009 and she would be paying on her principle. Then when the interest rate is set Jan 1, she would be paying interest on a lower amount.
